Delta 737-900ER First Class does not always mean the same cabin. Delta’s aircraft page lists three seat-map versions—739, 73J and 73R—with 20 First seats on the 739 and 12 on the other two. Check the map assigned to your flight before counting on adult-child pairs or paying for the cabin.

What does Delta 737-900ER First Class include?

Delta lists a First cabin on all three 737-900ER versions, but their seat counts and dimensions differ. The 739 lists 20 seats at 20.9 inches wide and 37 inches of pitch; 73J lists 12 seats at 21 inches wide and 45 inches of pitch; and 73R lists 12 seats at 20.9 inches wide and 37 inches of pitch. The aircraft code matters more than the broad model name.

Use Delta’s current 737-900ER seat and specification page for the cabin details. It also lists the seat maps and amenities for each code. A pitch measurement describes the distance between rows; it does not establish the seat’s recline or promise a lie-flat bed.

How do the 739, 73J and 73R layouts differ?

Delta’s published page shows a 20-seat First cabin on the 739 and smaller 12-seat First cabins on 73J and 73R. Those versions also divide the remaining cabin differently, so an older review that says “five rows of First” may describe a real flight without describing every Delta 737-900ER.

739 · 180 seats
20 First seats, 27 Comfort+ seats and 133 Main Cabin seats. Delta lists First at 20.9 inches wide with 37 inches of pitch. This is the 20-seat layout described by several recent flight reviews.
73J · 180 seats
12 First seats, 6 Comfort+ seats and 162 Main Cabin seats. Delta lists a 21-inch First seat with 45 inches of pitch. The larger pitch figure is not a lie-flat claim.
73R · 173 seats
12 First seats, 24 Comfort+ seats and 137 Main Cabin seats. Delta lists First at 20.9 inches wide with 37 inches of pitch; check the assigned map for current seats and features.

On the 739, Delta’s map and a June 2026 flight review show a 2-2 First arrangement across five rows. That is a useful example of one 739 trip, not a substitute for the map on your reservation.

The 73J and 73R each list 12 First seats, compared with 20 on the 739. For a larger household, the number of available pairs may change the odds of finding a workable group arrangement, even when the cabin label looks the same.

Which Delta 737-900ER layout works best for a family?

Start with the seat map attached to the exact flight, then check whether every child can sit beside an accompanying adult in that same cabin. The 739 offers more First seats in its published layout, but seat availability, aircraft changes and the size of your group still determine the practical fit.

If the current layout gives your party too few adjacent seats, compare other flights or cabins before paying to upgrade. A different departure may give the family a more workable seat map.

Will Delta seat children next to an adult?

For U.S. trips, Delta says it strives to seat family members together on request; its general policy does not guarantee a particular pair or block. If the website or Fly Delta app cannot assign workable seats, contact Reservations as described in Delta’s family seating guidance.

Check the seat assignment again after a schedule or aircraft change. If the new map no longer gives each child an adult beside them, contact Delta before departure and ask what options remain in the booked cabin.

Can a child safety seat be used in Delta First?

Delta allows an FAA-approved child safety seat in certain circumstances, but not every aircraft seat allows one. The carrier also says children under 2 cannot sit in an aircraft seat with an airbag belt, so confirm the exact seat and restraint before relying on a First Class assignment.

Delta’s child-item guidance says a restraint may be used when the child has a ticketed seat or an open passenger seat is available in the row; if there is no passenger seat for it, Delta says it must be gate-checked. The FAA’s child travel guidance explains the aircraft-use label and the restraint’s size and weight limits. Check the manufacturer’s instructions and ask Delta to confirm the restraint will work in the seat assigned to your flight.

Keep a compact activity kit and headphones easy to reach, and check the onboard entertainment or power features listed for your configuration. Delta’s 737-900ER page presents different amenities by map code, so do not assume that an older review’s screen, outlet or Wi-Fi details apply to every flight.

Is Delta 737-900ER First Class worth the family upgrade?

It depends on the total price for everyone, the seats your family can actually select and how the flight fits the day. First may be valuable when the extra room and cabin arrangement solve a real need, but the 737-900ER name alone does not promise a particular layout, service or amenity.

Compare the fare difference for every traveler with flight length, arrival time, connections and the seat map. Our American A321 First Class guide explains another fleet where similar aircraft names can point to different premium cabins; the United 737 MAX 8 First guide offers a separate domestic narrow-body comparison.

Use the family trip budget planner to compare the full-party cost. If departure timing matters more than cabin space, the nap-window flight planner can help compare schedules with your child’s routine; it cannot predict whether a child will sleep onboard.

For a Delta 737-900ER booking, the map code is the useful starting point. Check the assigned configuration, adult-child seat pairs, restraint rules and current amenities before deciding whether First is worth the added cost for everyone.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Delta 737-900ER have 20 First Class seats?

No. Delta lists three 737-900ER map codes: the 739 has 20 First seats, while 73J and 73R have 12 each. Check the code and map assigned to your flight.

Are Delta 737-900ER First Class seats lie-flat?

Delta's published 737-900ER page lists seat width and pitch by configuration, not a lie-flat suite specification. A 45-inch pitch on one map is not proof of a bed, so check the actual aircraft and cabin details.

Will Delta guarantee that children sit next to an adult?

Delta says it strives to seat family members together on request. If its website or app cannot assign workable seats, contact Reservations; the general U.S. policy is not a guarantee.

Can a child safety seat be used in Delta First Class?

Delta permits an FAA-approved child safety seat in certain circumstances, but not all seats allow one and a child under 2 cannot sit in a seat with an airbag belt. Confirm the device and assigned seat with Delta.
