Ethiopian 787 Business Class, sold as Cloud Nine, can involve quite different seats. Some cabins place passengers in open pairs, while others use individual seats with direct aisle access. For families, checking that difference before booking is more useful than choosing a row from a review of a different aircraft.

Which Ethiopian 787 Business cabin will your family get?

Ethiopian’s 787 fleet includes different Business layouts, so confirm the seat map attached to your own departure. The airline’s official map examples show both 2-2-2 paired seating and 1-2-1 individual seating; the aircraft family name alone does not establish the cabin.

The published 787-8 ET-AOO map shows three pairs across two aisles. The 787-9 ET-AXS map shows single window positions and a center pair. These are examples to recognize, not a promise that a particular registration will operate your flight.

Look for the grouping, seat type and available positions in the booking. If the display is unclear, ask Ethiopian to identify the planned configuration before paying a premium for a feature that matters to your family. Recheck it after an aircraft change.

Which seats work for adults and children in each layout?

In a paired 2-2-2 cabin, start with an adult-child pair; a center pair gives both travelers access to an aisle without passing their seatmate. In a 1-2-1 cabin, investigate a suitable center pair and check the divider, seat distance and parent’s ability to assist.

Family seat choices depend on the actual Ethiopian 787 layout.

A window-and-aisle pair may be pleasant for a child who values the view. In a paired cabin, however, the window passenger must pass their seatmate to reach the aisle. Nonstop Points’ July 2023 787-8 report describes that older paired arrangement, which is useful context for families considering it.

For four travelers, put the required assistance ahead of getting both adults together. A nearby adult-child arrangement is usually a more useful starting point than giving young children isolated seats so the adults can take a preferred pair.

Are all Ethiopian 787 Business seats fully flat?

Do not assume every Ethiopian 787 has the same fully flat Business seat or the same sleeping angle. Ask about the actual seat type on your departure, because older flight reports describe a different rest surface from newer individual-seat cabins.

A TravelUpdate report published in May 2025 describes an older 787-8 seat with a shallow angle. That is the reviewer’s observation on one journey, not proof that every current Ethiopian 787 has that seat.

If a level bed is the reason for spending more, obtain a clear answer about the planned cabin and compare the schedule as well. A late-night transfer or an intermediate stop can reduce the usable rest window even when the seat itself is comfortable.

Can babies use a bassinet or their own child seat?

Ask Ethiopian to confirm the infant arrangement for the exact flight, cabin and seat position. Its booking FAQ lists bassinet eligibility for babies under 11kg and within the stated 67cm length limit, with first-come availability and a charge for selecting the bassinet seat.

The bassinet booking FAQ directs passengers to the airline for further details. Do not assume every Cloud Nine bulkhead is an eligible position or that choosing extra legroom confirms a bassinet.

For a child seat brought from home, provide the model, approval label, dimensions and installation method. Confirm whether it is accepted in the planned Business seat and where it may be installed before purchasing a separate infant seat. A 1-2-1 shell and an open paired seat can create different practical questions.

If the bassinet is essential to the plan, establish a workable alternative with the airline before departure. Keep the accepted infant booking arrangement clear even if the requested equipment is unavailable.

How do you request meals for children?

Use Ethiopian’s meal-selection service or contact the airline to confirm an appropriate option for the child on each eligible flight. Special-meal selection and Cloud Nine main-course pre-order are separate services, with different deadlines.

The meal-selection FAQ describes eligible special-meal choices at least 24 hours before departure, through Manage My Trips or the app. It also excludes flights operated by another airline and notes other eligibility limits.

The separate in-flight menu and pre-order page gives eligible Cloud Nine main-course orders a 72-hour cutoff. Choosing an adult main course is not confirmation of a child’s dietary request.

Confirm each request after an itinerary change and pack familiar food within the applicable travel rules. Explain a dietary requirement directly to the airline rather than assuming a premium menu will meet it.

What should you pack for sleep and entertainment?

Bring the small items that help your child settle in their accepted seat, plus downloaded activities and compatible headphones. Onboard entertainment is useful, but it should support a simple plan that still works without a connection or functioning screen.

Painted long-haul family kit with headphones, a small blanket, blank tablet, closed storybook, snacks, spare shirt and zip pouches.

Keep a familiar blanket or other small sleep cue, one quiet activity and a spare shirt accessible. Store larger items as the crew directs, and explain the seat controls to an older child before the cabin settles.

Use the nap-window flight planner to compare the journey’s rest opportunities. Include the transfer and any scheduled stop rather than planning from the longest sector alone.

Ethiopian’s Cloud Nine service page describes meals, entertainment and ground benefits. The exact flight still determines the service sequence and how much time remains for rest.

How do Addis Ababa connections and intermediate stops affect the trip?

Read the full itinerary, including any intermediate stop on a through flight, before comparing the seats. The number of flight numbers alone does not tell you how many interruptions, transfers or boarding tasks the family will face.

Painted bright airport transit lounge with woven details, empty seating, burgundy luggage and a wide-body aircraft outside.

Ask whether a scheduled stop requires passengers to leave the aircraft, pass through security or board again. Check the airport and airline’s current instructions for the exact itinerary rather than copying a routine from another traveler’s trip.

At Addis Ababa, leave time for the walk, bathroom and food before deciding whether a lounge visit fits. The official Addis Ababa lounge page helps identify the facilities and applicable access.

Keep the family’s documents and in-transit bag organized with the relevant steps in how to travel with kids. Confirm stroller return and luggage handling for the actual connection, particularly if the next leg has a different operating airline.

Is Cloud Nine worth the family upgrade cost?

Cloud Nine is more compelling when the confirmed seat arrangement suits the children and the itinerary leaves meaningful time for comfort or rest. It is a weaker purchase when the seat type remains unclear or the journey includes interruptions that remove the benefit you are paying for.

Compare the total for everyone using the family trip budget planner. Include award fees, infant charges and any connecting sector that remains in another cabin, then compare the overall schedule with an alternative such as EgyptAir A350 Business.

Before paying, confirm the planned cabin, a workable adult-child grouping, the infant arrangement if needed and the full set of stops. Those answers give the family a more useful basis for buying than a rating of one reviewer’s meal or one aircraft’s seats.

Frequently asked questions

Do all Ethiopian 787 Business seats have direct aisle access?

No. Ethiopian's official map examples show both 2-2-2 paired seating and 1-2-1 individual seating. A window passenger in a paired layout does not have the same aisle access as a passenger in a 1-2-1 cabin.

Does booking an Ethiopian 787-9 guarantee one particular Business seat?

No. Confirm the layout and seat type attached to your departure, then review them after an aircraft change. A subtype or a dated review alone is insufficient to guarantee the cabin.

Are Ethiopian special-meal requests and main-course pre-orders the same?

No. Ethiopian's FAQ describes eligible special-meal selection at least 24 hours before departure. Its separate Cloud Nine main-course pre-order service has a 72-hour cutoff on eligible flights.
